How to choose book binding
Compare opening, durability and construction, not just the cover.

Cover and text block are different decisions
A hardcover describes the outer construction. The text block may be glued or sewn; a hard case does not prove sewn sections.
| Binding | Typical use | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Saddle stitching | Thin booklets | Creep, extent and stock |
| Perfect binding | Books and catalogues | Adhesive, grain and minimum spine |
| Sewn sections | Frequent use | Section plan and opening |
| Hardcover | Protection | Boards, joints and covering |
| Wire binding | Desk manuals | Punching margin and handling |
Test a physical sample
A narrow, thick book can hide content near its inner margin. Inspect a sample of similar extent before setting margins.
